The Man Who Obsesses Over the 1% Nobody Notices.
RUDAI'S NOTES
From right: Nakatani-san, Hotta-san, and Keita-san. And yes — we really did hang all that fruit for this shot.
Do you know Nakatani-san, LiLo's designer?
Coffee bean bags. Pin badges. The packaging your online order arrives in. The Brand Book that introduces all of LiLo. The fans and stickers we hand out every anniversary. They're all pretty great, right? Nakatani-san has been behind every one of these designs since the very beginning.
LiLo Coffee Roasters
On the fifth floor of the same building as LiLo Coffee Roasters, there's the design team's office. That's where I work too — sitting right next to Nakatani-san. Watching him work every day, there's so much I want to tell you about. So many moments where I think, this guy is unbelievable.
Above all, his work is meticulous beyond belief. Nakatani-san is someone who obsesses endlessly over the 1% that no one might ever notice.
What shape should this typeface be? What does this space actually need? The position of a single character, the slightest change in the size of an illustration, the layout — he adjusts them over and over again. And then, when it's finally finished, the next morning he'll be there staring at yesterday's design all over again.

NAKATANI
"I let it sit overnight, then look at it again."
You're still going?! I can barely stop myself from asking.
Not everything is made inside a computer.
Nakatani-san's designs — the letters, the illustrations — aren't all made inside a computer.
Take the "Flavor Map" you get with your coffee at LiLo Coffee Roasters. Just like the name says, it's a card that works like a map for finding the flavors in your cup. It doesn't just list flavor names — it invites you to wonder, "What do I taste in this?" and guides you into the fun of the coffee world.
You've probably seen one at least once. Those illustrations of fruit, chocolate, and flowers? They weren't made by AI. Every single one of that staggering number of flavor illustrations was painted by hand, by Nakatani-san, with paint and a brush.
COFFEE is more FREE, and more FUN!」
And then there's the blue booklet we've been handing out at every LiLo shop this summer. The lettering on that cover? Also handmade. The theme: "Coffee can be more free, and more fun. COFFEE is more FREE, and more FUN!"
I was wondering how he'd turn that theme into a design — and then he just started snipping away at colored paper, cutting out the letters themselves.
Look closely and you'll notice that of the two "more"s, only one is in capital letters. Wait — is that a mistake?

NAKATANI
"The theme was that it's okay to be free, so I let the cuts be free too. Uppercase, lowercase — I made those freely as well."
Ahhh, I see. The message he wants to convey is dissolved right into the design itself. That's so cool!
Something surprised me while talking with Nakatani-san. He's handled LiLo Coffee's design since year one — but originally, he had zero interest in coffee. He'd spent years at another design firm, and back then LiLo was just one of his clients.
And that's exactly why, I think, his instinct for what's hard to understand is so sharp. The things that feel like common sense to coffee people. The places where our urge to say "we want you to know this!" gets a little too strong. He looks at all of it calmly, from a small distance, thinking through the eyes of people with all kinds of backgrounds and relationships with coffee.
When I first visited LiLo as a customer and instinctively felt "this is fun!", maybe it wasn't only because the coffee was delicious. It had been designed so that coffee would feel fun from many different points of view — not just for people who already love it, but for people who aren't that into it yet. That's why, even on my first visit, I slipped so naturally into LiLo's world.
Through working with so many people as a designer, maybe Nakatani-san has come to carry many people's eyes inside him. Which is why he places letters and illustrations, and thinks about layout, while imagining possibilities far beyond what I can see.
Here's what Nakatani-san told me.

NAKATANI
"What I care about most is making sure LiLo comes across to customers with as little friction as possible. I want the deliciousness of the beans Keita-san roasts, and the coffee our baristas brew, to reach people even a little more. It's really small stuff, but I think design's job is to make LiLo land 1% faster, 1% deeper. And on top of that, adding fun elements so that what makes LiLo LiLo comes through."
Sometimes our desire to "tell people!" and "get this across!" gets a little too loud. Nakatani-san takes those feelings, all that joy, and shapes them into something that actually lands — completely. And right up to the very last moment, he keeps obsessing over that 1% no one might ever notice.
Maybe that's what design really is.
The flavor maps and goods sitting in your hands right now. Not a single one of them was made "just because." The shape of the letters, the size of the illustrations, the texture of the paper, the white space, the placement. Every detail carries a reason, and a feeling.
That tiny 1% you usually walk right past without noticing. Today, take just a little more time than usual, and have a really good look.
