Before You Know It, You're Swept Into the Fun.
RUDAI'S NOTES
Back when I was just another customer at LiLo, I honestly thought Keita-san, our head roaster, owned the company.
Turns out, I was completely wrong. The owner of LiLo is Hotta-san. He doesn't usually work behind the coffee bar, so some of you might not even know who he is.
Quick quiz! Can you guess which one is Hotta-san?

That's right. The one who stands out the most. The incredibly sharp eyes. The unbelievably long hair. Once you've seen him, you'll never forget him. (Laughs.)

Here's another surprise. Hotta-san is still a full-time hairstylist. He opened LiLo in veve, his hair salon, in 2008. Then in 2014, LiLo Coffee Roasters opened on the first floor of the same building. Today, he's the founder of LiLo in veve Co., Ltd., a company that somehow includes a hair salon, coffee shops, a design studio, and even a gyoza restaurant.

LiLo does so many different things that people often ask, "So... what exactly is LiLo?" Honestly... sometimes we wonder the same thing. One day someone says, "We're opening a gyoza restaurant." Then another day, "We're opening a new shop in Kyoto." Before we know it... it's already happening.
But after watching Hotta-san for a while, that mystery started to make sense.
The kind of person who makes things happen.
Do you know someone like this? Someone who makes you feel like something exciting is about to happen just by being around them. Someone who casually says, "Wouldn't this be fun?" ...and somehow everyone ends up joining in. That's exactly who Hotta-san is to me.
By the way... do you know what LiLo actually means? If you do, I'm impressed.
LiLo in veve ← Live in Love「つながりの中で生きる。」
The "LiLo" in LiLo Coffee Roasters comes from the name of the company: LiLo in veve. It comes from the phrase Live in Love — living through connections with people.
When I first heard it, I simply thought, "That's a beautiful phrase." But now... I think it's much more than a company philosophy. I think it's the way Hotta-san actually lives.
Take Keita-san, for example. He and Hotta-san were classmates in high school. Even back then, Hotta-san remembers thinking, "That guy's interesting." After graduation, they each went their own way.

Normally... that's where the story ends. Not for Hotta-san. He stayed in touch with Keita-san for more than ten years. Then one day he said, "Want to get serious about coffee together?" That single invitation became the beginning of LiLo Coffee Roasters.
Here's the amazing part. Keita-san only entered the coffee industry after Hotta-san invited him. So if that conversation had never happened... LiLo Coffee Roasters wouldn't exist today. Sounds like something straight out of a manga, doesn't it?
And it wasn't just Keita-san. There's Nakatani-san, who leads all of LiLo's design. And Hiro-san, who now runs Gyoza to LiLo to Marumaru to. When I asked them about how they joined LiLo, they all told me something similar. Apparently Hotta-san had casually invited them several times before they eventually said yes.
What fascinates me is how lightly he says it. Changing jobs is a huge decision. But Hotta-san makes it sound more like, "Wouldn't this be more fun?"
Remember when you were a kid? Someone would ask, "Want to play after school?" You didn't know what you'd be doing. You had no plan. No idea how the day would end. You just thought, "Sounds fun." And before you knew it, you were already part of it. You could figure out the details later.
Hotta-san's invitations feel a little like that.
And somehow... I became one of those people too. Well... not exactly. I wasn't invited. I kind of forced my way in. (Laughs.)
I loved LiLo so much that I wrote pages and pages about why I wanted to work here and what I thought I could contribute. Then I brought the letter to the company. They weren't even hiring. Looking back... I had absolutely no sense of timing.
But Hotta-san read it and simply said, "Rudai... maybe you'd be good at something like this." Instead of putting me behind the coffee bar, he created a completely different role.
Honestly... isn't it comforting when everything is already planned out? But at the same time... doesn't that get just a little boring?
Hotta-san works the opposite way. He never says, "This is exactly how it's going to turn out." Instead he says, "Wouldn't it be fun if we tried this?" He paints a picture. Creates the opportunity. Then says, "All right. Your turn." What happens after that... depends on the people involved. Nobody knows exactly what will come out of it. And somehow... that's the exciting part.
LiLo isn't a company built around businesses. It's built around people. First, there's someone interesting. Hotta-san notices something in them. Then he says, "You might shine even brighter over here." And he creates the space. Whether it's something small... or something as big as opening an entirely new shop... he approaches both with exactly the same energy.
Before long, people find themselves swept into the fun. From there, everyone builds something in their own way.

LiLo Coffee Roastersも。 IN THE COFFEE KYOTOも。
LiLo Coffee Roasters. LiLo Coffee KISSA. IN THE COFFEE KYOTO. The hair salon. The design studio. The gyoza restaurant. They're all completely different. Different colors. Different personalities. But they're connected by the same excitement. To me... that's what LiLo is.
Whenever I see the name LiLo in veve — Live in Love — I no longer think of it as a company philosophy. I think of Hotta-san. Before you know it, someone new has joined the adventure. Someone else is smiling. Something unexpected has begun.
To live with people at the center. To make life a little more fun for the people around you. And maybe... leave the world a little brighter than before. I think there's something incredibly romantic about that.
